When to come

The best time to visit Porto Rafti.

Greek summer has a long arc: warm sea from May to late October, hot days from June to mid-September, perfect afternoons in either shoulder. Here's what each month actually feels like, written by someone who lives here.

The short answer

If you want warm sea + few crowds, come in late May or September. If you want peak Greek summer energy, come in July or August. If you want a quiet writer's retreat with the fireplace on, come in November to March.

Month by month

May — the shoulder begins

Air 22–26°C, sea 19–21°C by mid-month and very swimmable by the end. Wildflowers everywhere. Tavernas reopening for the season; never crowded. Long days. Possibly our favourite month — if the sea is warm enough for you, you have the place almost to yourself.

June — perfect, before peak

Air 26–30°C, sea 22–24°C. Locals are out swimming, but Athenian holidays don't start until July, so weekdays at the beach are quiet. Long evenings, mosquitoes start appearing — use the nets.

July — full summer

Air 30–35°C, sea 24–26°C. The town fills with Athenian families. Tavernas need reservations on Fridays and Saturdays. Weekday mornings at the beach are still calm. Book the villa early; July dates go first.

August — Greek high season

Air 30–36°C with occasional 38°C spikes, sea 25–27°C. Greece moves to the coast for the month. Locals are warm and friendly but everything is busier and more expensive. The villa books out in winter for August — if you want it, message us in February.

September — the locals' favourite

Air 26–30°C, sea at its warmest (25–27°C). The Athenians go back to work after the first week, beaches empty, tavernas still open, wineries pressing grapes. A magical month if you can come.

October — slow and golden

Air 20–26°C, sea 22–24°C and still pleasant for swimming until mid-month. A few rainy days possible. Light is gorgeous. Many tavernas are still open through Greek "Indian summer."

November to March — off-season

Air 8–18°C, sea 14–17°C (locals do swim — you might not want to). Most beach tavernas closed; village tavernas open year-round. Cold evenings, warm fireplace, dramatic light. Perfect if you're writing a novel, walking, or want central Athens within reach without summer chaos.

April — the awakening

Air 18–22°C, sea still cold (16–18°C). Almond and orange blossom in the inland villages. Easter is the high point of the Greek year — if you can come the week of Greek Easter (movable feast, usually late April / early May), you'll see Porto Rafti at its most authentic: midnight candle processions, lamb roasting on village squares, the local choir.

What to book around

Greek public holidays that fill up

Athens marathon weekend

The original Marathon route ends in central Athens but starts ~25 minutes from us. Early November. Runners often book a quiet base on the east coast — message us if that's you.

Our take

Late May, mid-September, and the first week of October are the three windows we'd recommend to anyone who isn't tied to school holidays. Warm sea, mild evenings, half-empty beaches, every taverna still open, prices off-peak. The Greek coast is at its best then.
