Cape Sounion & the Temple of Poseidon (45 min)
The classic Attica day trip — and it deserves the hype. The temple sits on a cliff at the southern tip of the peninsula, with the sea on three sides. Sunset there is one of the great experiences in Greece. The drive down is along the coast, with constant sea views.
How to do it
- Leave the villa around 4 pm in summer (3 pm in winter).
- Drive south through Lavrio — there are several swimming coves along the way for an afternoon dip.
- Arrive at Sounion ~90 minutes before sunset. Park, walk up, photograph the temple, then sit on the rocks for the sunset itself.
- Dinner at one of the fish tavernas on the road back, in Lavrio or Anavyssos.
- Back at the villa by 11 pm.
Entrance to the archaeological site is around €10. Bring a light layer — it gets breezy on the cliff.
Athens (40 min each way)
You can drive to central Athens in 40 minutes outside rush hour. Park at one of the underground car parks at Syntagma or Plaka (€10–15 for the day) and walk everywhere from there.
One day in Athens, our version
- Morning: the Acropolis (open at 8 am — go early to avoid both heat and crowds), then the new Acropolis Museum next door.
- Lunch: in the Pangrati or Koukaki neighbourhoods rather than touristy Plaka.
- Afternoon: walk through the Plaka and Anafiotika (the Cycladic village inside the city), then the Agora.
- Evening: sunset drink on a rooftop overlooking the Acropolis. Plenty of options around Monastiraki.
- Back to the villa for a late swim — the bay is at its calmest at 11 pm.
The Cyclades by ferry, in a day (Andros)
One of the great things about being on the east coast of Attica is the proximity to Rafina port — 25 minutes north of the villa — which sails to the closer Cyclades. The most realistic day-trip destination is Andros: 2-hour ferry, beautiful island, back the same evening.
- First ferry from Rafina usually sails around 7:30 am.
- Spend the day in Batsi (the prettiest seaside village) or hike the spectacular Andros trail system.
- Last ferry back is typically around 8 pm — check the schedule with Hellenic Seaways or Golden Star Ferries.
Tinos and Mykonos are also reachable from Rafina but they're more of a weekend than a day trip.
Lavrio & the islands of the Saronic (35 min)
Lavrio is an old mining port 35 minutes south of the villa. From there, smaller ferries go to Kea (Tzia) — a quiet, beautiful island that's barely on the tourist map and makes a perfect day trip. 1-hour crossing, sailings several times a day in summer.
Marathon (30 min)
Yes, that Marathon. The site of the 490 BC battle is 30 minutes north of the villa — a small museum, the burial mound of the Athenian dead, and the long stretch of beach where the Persian fleet was waiting. A short, atmospheric trip for history travellers.
Delphi (2.5 hr each way)
Possible as a long day, but you'll spend half of it driving. Better as an overnight if you really want to do it justice. The site is genuinely extraordinary — the navel of the ancient world, in a mountain setting that explains why.
What we'd skip on a one-week stay
- Hydra and Aegina — beautiful, but the ferries leave from Piraeus (other side of Athens), so the day is mostly transit.
- Meteora — incredible, but it's a 4-hour drive each way. Save it for a separate trip.
- Santorini in a day — please don't. It's a 7-hour ferry.
The right rhythm for a week here: two beach mornings, one Athens day, one Sounion sunset, one ferry day to a nearby island, one slow day at the villa, one wandering day. Greek summer rewards going slow.← Back to all guides
